The "Seminario Matematico e Fisico di Milano" was officially inaugurated on February 9, 1927, following the constitution of its first Board of Directors (November 27, 1926). The Seminar was established by uniting the existing forces in the Milanese universities with the aim of spreading the culture of mathematics and physics and promoting studies and research in these fields.

Call for applications is now open for the inaugural edition. Eligibility criteria and submission procedures are available in the official call.
The Seminar's activities consist of conferences, workshops, lectures, and other activities aimed at fostering its mission.
These activities are carried out at the Seminar's sponsoring universities—Università degli Studi di Milano, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, Università degli Studi dell'Insubria, and Politecnico di Milano. The Seminar may also grant its patronage to scientific events at external venues when this is consistent with its institutional aims.
As of 2026, the Seminar has approximately 350 members.
Historically, the Seminar's conferences were published in the Rendiconti del Seminario Matematico e Fisico di Milano (1927–2000).
Since 2001, the Seminar's Rendiconti developed into the Milan Journal of Mathematics, a Birkhäuser publication. The journal publishes the Seminar's conferences, proceedings of meetings promoted by the Seminar, as well as original articles.
The organization and governance of the Seminar are defined in its articles of association. The current text is available for download.
